LOVED this. The Nancy Meyers aesthetics trend always rubbed me the wrong way but I could never pinpoint as to why. This essay puts it perfectly: The kitchen decor does not solve any of the problems, the women do it themselves!

"All of Meyers’ characters are career women - they do not need to depend on anyone else to support them. They are financially stable and independent. I love seeing this on screen, and I love how it’s not a big deal." YASSSSS!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I have thought this SO often; the 'Nancy Myers' TikTok aesthetic is missing the entire point of her characters??? They are mostly badass WOMEN OF THE CORPORATE LADDER, baby. Pay respect!!

Another glorious post. 👏🏻

As a journalist who has written about Nancy Meyers interiors (🫣), I had the most incredible convo with a designer who broke down it down into *feelings* and I’m so obsessed. Essentially good design isn’t all about what a room looks like, but more about what it feels like—which is why so many people love her films and chase after “Nancy Meyers aesthetic.” Bc really, all of her interiors are different! How can you compare Iris’ cottage to Jane’s kitchen, ya know?

I think we’re all really after that cozy, lived in vibe that she does so well. But to emphasize your point and your gorgeous writing—it’s so much more than good design (and gorgeous kitchens!) I loved this piece so much Ella, thank you for sharing it!! 🫶🏼💕

Thank you for sharing your thoughts Kristen!! 💗Completely agree - her interiors are a perfect extension of the characters. They really help us get to know them in a way that the dialogue and action just can't. Reflecting her design choices in our own homes is an easy way to bring the feelings of the movie into our own spaces!

When I tell you this is EVERYTHING I've ever needed in a piece, it truly is! Your words and thoughts describe the beauty of Nancy Meyer's (and the life/love of a true romcom girly) impeccably. Thank you for reminding us that life itself is truly romantic. Not kitchens, aesthetics, or clothing styles. But the genuine chaos of life. Meyer's depicts this SO beautifully and you expressed it even more so!! Ugh your mind!!

🥹this comment has made my day thank you so much! I'm so happy you enjoyed it. But I honestly think it's true - her movies resonate so much because of who the women are, not because of what their kitchens look like!!

She has also posted and said: don’t call it a rom-com. That’s the only thing I disagree with her on.

Yes I saw that!! I agree, I don't think calling it a rom-com is any disrespect to the genre
