Amazing piece! I won't lie- the Ted Lasso cover you had really hooked me in, and I'm glad it did because I've honestly been wanting to get into football myself and am not sure how to. As a college girl myself, it is a bit intimidating to get into the whole sport. Where do you start watching? How do you research? Am i even asking the right questions lol. Combined with the Ted Lasso stuff, I've also been super inspired by John Green and his obsession with AFC Wimbledon. It all just seems like a great community to get into. Thanks for writing this again!

Hahaha, I completely get that it's overwhelming! I guess the first thing to start with would be watching a variety of games to see which team you enjoy watching the most and that you want to support. I inherited my team so I didn't do this step, but watch a variety of matches in the premier league and the championship - these are the ones on TV the most. The more games you see, the more you'l learn. They're quite different in style, the premier league has more elite players whereas in the championship you never know who is going to win which can be quite exciting! In terms of research, there's lots of good shows on Amazon Prime that give you an idea of the behind the scenes and how it all works, I think they have a documentary series on Man City and Arsenal and a few others. To be completely honest, I'd avoid Welcome to Wrexham because it is a bit of a Disney-fictation of football. Not that it's not fun to watch, but I don't think it's entirely accurate. Hope this is helpful!! Thank you so much for reading Abigail 💕

Love this piece so much, thank you ❤️ While following Arsenal my whole life has admittedly *caused* me anxiety (so many stressful games!!) it has really helped my generalised anxiety too - the routine of the fixtures, knowing my weekends are structured for 10 months of the year; having those few hours a week where I think of nothing but the game (as you said, like a mindfulness practice where you have something to focus on); having something so big and exciting to be fiercely passionate about; and the community, all the interesting characters, the second family I've found through football - all do wonders for my mental health. I hope football brings you all the comfort and joy you deserve. Enjoy the new season! xx

Oh my gosh what a lovely comment!! Thank you so much for reading!!! Hahah I know what you mean, it's juxtaposition to call football meditative when it causes so much pain and frustration 😂 so many stories I've written have stemmed from the characters I've met at a match, there's just so many different people and there's something so gorgeous about everyone coming together no matter their background because they all love and support the same thing. Best of luck for the new season to you too! I'm sure you guys will do well!!
