Yes yes yes, I love this. The leads in the rom coms you’ve mentioned aren’t finding love, they’re usually finding themselves! And often with a beautiful backdrop, what’s not to love! 💕
Really well-written article Ella! I completely agree with the misconception of rom-com movies. At the same time, I think that this arises from the newer romantic comedy Netflix movies that lack a good storyline (relatable characters & a relatable obstacle).
Also, can you even compete with romcoms with actors like Tom Hanks, Matthew McConaughey, Meg Ryan, Kate Hudson, Hugh Grant, and Julia Roberts? I don't think so hahaha.
Thank you for reading Ivo! Yes - agreed, recent rom-coms don't seem to have the same depth that the classics do, although I'm hoping this will change! Tom Hanks will always be my fave leading man, but I'll be honest, Glen Powell is doing a pretty good job
Oh and I also agree about how the characters feel pretty real. They might be a bit idealized, but they’re dealing with the same things we do and not everything in them is perfect
YES!! They’re just people with super romanticised lives. I think just because something is romantic doesn’t mean that it’s not flawed. Thank you for reading Mari, I really appreciate your lovely comments!!
Omg I love this! I watched Sleepless in Seattle last night for the first time and completely fell in love🩷 I really got inspired suddenly to write about those specific scenes or quotes that make me dream and I know I will end up sharing them inevitably here💕💕 90s rom-coms really do fix everything!
Omg PLEASE write that Mari!! I would love to read it!! Sleepless in Seattle is one of my favourites, such a dreamy movie and Tom Hanks is just the perfect lead.
Ella! You have smashed it with this article! I really really loved this piece and it made me feel warm inside. I also like how it made me consider the other side of rom-coms that we all usually brush off. When you said that the main characters in rom-coms usually are going through something but we brush it off because they live in an amazing cottage in Sussex, or are a journalist for a fashion mag. It's so true!!! I think I fall into the rosy-tinted coloured glasses perspective when I watch a good rom-com and only see the positives but forget that the character is being cheated on, or going through a divorce, or having a really hard time! Also, I loved your take on Hygge too. Made me feel super excited for Autumn!!! <3
Omg THANK YOU!! 🤭 Exactly!! Once we get past the romanticised facade of romcoms they're basically documentaries lol. We can all be rom com leads with the right playlist and I will carry that with me as long as I live 💕💕
Haha I’ve just read your substacks and I totally see what you mean, thank you so much for reading 🥹 honestly a dream that you feel you can relate to my writing 💓💓

Exactly! It's interesting to see the flaws in these kinds of “perfect” characters. Sometimes they remind you of something from your own life. ✨

Looove! It’s like you crawled into my brain 🥰 What’s the point if we’re not completely romanticizing every little thing? 🤍
